Galería Alentar is pleased to present Alejandro Figueroa: In Focus, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Mexico City. The show focuses on Figueroa’s Los Xinacates series, a collection of photographs taken over the last three years during the annual Carnival de San Nicolás de los Ranchos in Puebla, Mexico. The origins of the festival date to the pre-Hispanic period wherein men would wear traditional masks, cover their bodies in oils and natural pigments, and use sticks, whips and other tools to strike the ground. In the pre-Hispanic era, these ritual figures were known as xinacátl, the Nahuatl word meaning ‘nude’, and this sacred custom was believed to bring fertility to the community, both agricultural and reproductive. Today, the men, known by the hispanicized Los Xinacates, wear sunglasses, masks of their favorite luchadores, helmets, and face coverings taken from popular culture. They cover their bodies in industrial paint, charcoal, or burnt oil, and carry anything from sticks and whips to chains and lightsabers. The contemporary Carnival perfectly combines those things that make México Mágico: it brings together the folkloric and the fantastic, the native and the foreign, the real and the imaginary. In his photographs of Los Xinacates, Alejandro Figueroa intervenes on his documentary images, adding references to Mexico’s rich and vibrant indigenous traditions, such as the inclusion of the neon Teotón—an ancient astronomical observatory site—in the eponymous image.
